Two days in Cairo by flight from Sharm El Sheikh. You are collected from your hotel and flown to Cairo, where your guide takes you to the Giza Pyramids on the first day. Why fly. By road, Cairo is a long drive from Sharm El Sheikh across Sinai and under the Suez Canal. The flight takes about an hour, which turns Cairo into an easy, comfortable two-day break from the beach. We pick you up from your Sharm hotel and you are met on arrival in Cairo by your guide.
Day 1, pyramids and Saqqara. Start at Giza with the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. The Great Pyramid, built around 2560 BCE, is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. Meet the Great Sphinx, then after lunch continue to Saqqara and the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the earliest pyramid in Egypt, designed by Imhotep around 2670 BCE. In the evening check in to your hotel.
Day 2, the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Citadel. The Grand Egyptian Museum next to the Giza plateau is the largest museum in the world devoted to a single civilisation. For the first time, the entire treasure of Tutankhamun is displayed together, including his gold mask, chariots and shrines, along with a monumental staircase lined with statues. After lunch you visit the Citadel, the medieval fortress overlooking Cairo, and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, before your evening flight back to Sharm.
Good to know. Bring your passport for the domestic flights and pack a small overnight bag. Pickup in Sharm is early on day one. Cairo is cooler than Sharm in winter, so take a light jacket between November and March.
