The honest picture before you go

What the law says and how it affects visitors, in plain words.
The short answer

Yes, LGBTQ+ travellers visit Egypt every year, but this is a conservative country and discretion matters. Same-sex relationships are not explicitly illegal, yet the authorities have prosecuted LGBTQ+ people under broad “debauchery” laws, and there is little public acceptance of same-sex couples. Visitors who keep their private life private, travel with a trusted guide and avoid dating apps can enjoy the trip like anyone else.

Practical tips for LGBTQ+ visitors

The same advice we give close friends.
  • Keep affection for private spaces. Public kissing or cuddling is frowned on for all couples in Egypt, and same-sex couples are likely to draw negative attention.
  • Do not use dating apps in Egypt. Human rights groups have reported police using apps to identify and arrest LGBTQ+ people.
  • Leave rainbow flags and pride items at home. People have been prosecuted for showing them at public events.
  • Think before you post. Avoid sharing intimate photos or location-tagged posts while you are in the country.
  • Hand-holding between men is common in Egypt and usually reads as friendship, so do not over-read what you see.
  • Save our number and your hotel address. If anything feels wrong, call us first and we will help.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what travellers ask us most.

Is Egypt safe for gay travellers?

Egypt is safe for most visitors, but it is a conservative country. Same-sex couples who stay discreet in public, travel with a private guide and avoid dating apps rarely draw attention. Public displays of affection are frowned on for every couple.

Is homosexuality illegal in Egypt?

Same-sex relationships are not explicitly criminalised, but the authorities have prosecuted LGBTQ+ people under broad debauchery laws. Discretion in public and online is the safest approach.

Can a same-sex couple share a hotel room in Egypt?

Yes. We book one room for two adult guests with the bed type you choose. Friends and relatives commonly share rooms in Egypt, so it is a normal booking.

Can we hold hands in public?

Hand-holding between two men is common in Egypt and is usually seen as friendship, but kissing or other affection in public is best kept for private spaces, as it is for all couples.

Are your guides LGBTQ+ friendly?

Yes. Our Egyptologist guides are professional and respectful with every guest, and they will never ask about your private life.

Can you build a custom gay-friendly itinerary?

Yes. Both tours on this page are starting points. Tell us your dates and interests and we will plan a fully private trip, including a private dahabiya on the Nile.
