Cairo and Giza: Where Every Egypt Trip Begins

Cairo is Egypt’s beating heart and the natural base for your trip. Spend 2-3 days here and you will never run out of things to see. The Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx sit at the city’s western edge, exactly where they have for 4,500 years. The Egyptian Museum holds the largest collection of ancient artefacts in the world, including Tutankhamun’s solid gold death mask. Khan el-Khalili bazaar pulls you into 700 years of merchant history with its labyrinthine lanes of copper, spices, and perfume. Islamic Cairo’s medieval mosques and the Citadel of Saladin round out a city that rewards three days of serious exploration.

Cairo is also your logistics hub. Every domestic flight to Luxor, Aswan, Sharm, and Hurghada departs from here, and the road to Alexandria runs straight north. Plan your Cairo days at the start of your trip before heading south or east.

Luxor: The World’s Greatest Open-Air Museum

Luxor was ancient Thebes, capital of Egypt at the height of its empire. Today it holds more intact ancient monuments than any other city on Earth. The West Bank is where pharaohs chose to be buried, giving us the Valley of the Kings (62 royal tombs including Tutankhamun), the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, and the twin Colossi of Memnon. The East Bank has Karnak Temple, the largest ancient religious complex ever built, and Luxor Temple, which glows gold under floodlights at night.

Two full days covers Luxor well. Fly from Cairo (1 hour) or travel up the Nile on a classic Nile cruise that departs from Aswan. Most of our clients combine Luxor with an Aswan extension for the complete Upper Egypt experience.

Aswan: Nubian Beauty at the First Cataract

Aswan is Egypt’s southernmost major city, where the Nile narrows and the Nubian Desert begins. It is slower-paced than Cairo and Luxor, with a warm, spice-scented atmosphere that visitors find immediately calming. Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis and relocated to its island after the construction of the Aswan High Dam, is one of Egypt’s most beautifully situated ancient sites. A sunset felucca ride around Elephantine Island, a visit to a traditional Nubian village, and a meal of slow-cooked Nubian stew complete the Aswan experience.

Abu Simbel, 3.5 hours further south by road, is a non-negotiable addition to any Aswan visit. The twin temples carved into a sandstone cliff by Ramses II are among the most impressive constructions in human history. The early morning convoy from Aswan arrives as the temples glow in the rising sun.

Alexandria: Egypt’s Mediterranean Soul

Alexandria sits on the Mediterranean coast 220 km northwest of Cairo, and it feels like a completely different country. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, it was once the intellectual capital of the ancient world, home to the Library of Alexandria and a lighthouse that was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today the city’s layered Greek, Roman, and Egyptian heritage surfaces at the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and the imposing Qaitbay Citadel. The seafront Corniche, lined with weathered apartment buildings and fish restaurants, has an unmistakably Mediterranean mood.

Alexandria makes an excellent day trip from Cairo (2.5 hours each way) or a relaxed overnight escape from the capital’s intensity.

Hurghada: Red Sea Reefs and Desert Adventures

Hurghada is Egypt’s largest Red Sea resort and the most convenient base for combining beach relaxation with serious historical sightseeing. The Giftun Islands offer world-class snorkeling with coral gardens that have stayed healthy thanks to marine park protections. Luxor is just 3 hours away by road, making it entirely feasible to wake up on a Red Sea beach and be standing in the Valley of the Kings by midmorning. Desert safaris into the Eastern Desert, quad bike adventures, and sunset dhow cruises fill the evenings when you are not in the water.

Sharm El Sheikh: Sinai’s Dive Capital

Sharm El Sheikh sits at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, where the Gulf of Aqaba meets the Gulf of Suez. The underwater world here is spectacular: Ras Mohammed National Park, Tiran Island, and the SS Thistlegorm shipwreck are among the Red Sea’s most celebrated dive sites. Above the water, St. Catherine’s Monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries. And Cairo’s Pyramids are just a 1-hour flight away, making Sharm a practical base for those who want beaches first and ancient history second.

Siwa Oasis: Egypt’s Most Remote Destination

Siwa sits deep in the Western Desert, 750 km from Cairo, 19 km from the Libyan border. It is the most culturally distinct destination in Egypt: the Siwan Amazigh (Berber) people speak their own language, practice their own traditions, and produce olive oil and dates that are sold across Egypt. The Oracle Temple of Amun, which Alexander the Great visited in 331 BC to be confirmed as a god, is Siwa’s most famous ancient site. The Great Sand Sea, stretching endlessly to the south, is the setting for one of Egypt’s most exhilarating experiences: a 4WD safari with sandboarding on 100-metre dunes, ending at a hot spring pool in the desert.

Siwa requires commitment — plan for at least 2 nights — but nearly every traveller who makes the journey describes it as the highlight of their Egypt trip.

  • An amazing experience and only made better by our fantastic guide Manal, she was an amazing Egyptologist and really helped us to understand the true history of Egypt, not just ancient. The museum was great although you can’t see all of the exhibits at the moment due to the move to the new unopened museum
