Intro

Planning an Egypt trip from the UK has rarely been easier. British Airways and EgyptAir both run daily direct flights from London Heathrow to Cairo, the route is just over five hours, and the time difference is only one or two hours depending on the season. We have hosted 198 UK travellers since 2013, and the trips that work best for British visitors share a few traits: shoulder-season departures, a Nile cruise as the spine of the itinerary, and the time to do Cairo properly instead of rushing it.

This guide collects everything we tell UK travellers when they start planning. Direct flight options, the best months to fly from London for the weather and the crowds, currency and tipping notes, and the itineraries that consistently land well with UK guests. Every Egypt tour we run is private and built around what you and your party want to see, with a licensed Egyptologist guide on every site visit.

Direct flights from the UK to Egypt

The fastest way to Egypt from the UK is the direct route London Heathrow to Cairo, operated by both EgyptAir and British Airways. Flight time is 5 hours 10 minutes on average, with EgyptAir running two daily rotations and British Airways a single afternoon departure. Manchester and Birmingham travellers can connect via Heathrow or fly through Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, which adds three to four hours but often comes in cheaper.

For Luxor or Aswan arrivals there are no direct UK flights. The standard routing is London to Cairo, overnight in Cairo, then a domestic EgyptAir flight to Luxor or Aswan the next morning. Your Egyptologist guide meets you at the domestic terminal and the day starts immediately at Karnak Temple or the Valley of the Kings.

Hurghada has direct charter flights from several UK regional airports during high season, mostly Manchester, Birmingham, and Gatwick. These are package holiday routes more than independent traveller routes, but they do work if you want to combine a Red Sea beach stay with a Cairo or Luxor extension.

Best time for a UK traveller to visit Egypt

October through April is the comfortable season across all of Egypt. November and February are our sweet spot for UK guests: temperatures sit around 23 to 27 degrees in the south, the heat is manageable on a half-day temple visit, and the Nile cruise crowds are lighter than they are during the Christmas peak. December and January are technically peak season with the highest prices and the busiest sites.

The British summer (May through September) is generally too hot for Upper Egypt. Daytime temperatures in Luxor and Aswan regularly hit 40 to 42 degrees and stay there. If August is your only window because of school holidays, plan a Mediterranean-focused trip instead: Alexandria, the North Coast, and a couple of Cairo days work well. We have done a few honeymoon trips for UK couples in late August that focused on the Red Sea, but skipped the southern temples entirely.

Ramadan timing shifts each year and worth noting if your dates fall during the month. Most sites and restaurants stay open, but operating hours tighten and some quieter towns slow down considerably. We adjust the daily timing of tours during Ramadan automatically.

Popular itinerary lengths for UK visitors

UK travellers tend to take longer Egypt trips than US or Australian guests, probably because the flight is shorter and the time difference smaller. Our most-booked UK itineraries are 10 to 14 days, with the spine being either a 4-night or 7-night Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan or vice versa.

A typical 10-day UK trip: three nights Cairo (Grand Egyptian Museum, Pyramids of Giza, Saqqara, Khan El Khalili), fly to Luxor, board the cruise, four nights cruising Luxor to Aswan with stops at Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Philae, two nights Aswan with an Abu Simbel day, fly back to Cairo, depart.

A 14-day version adds Alexandria for two nights at the start, swaps the 4-night cruise for a 7-night, and gives you a full Red Sea beach finish at Hurghada or El Gouna before flying home. If you have not yet been to Egypt and have the time, the 14-day version is the one we recommend most often.

How long to plan and book ahead

For November through March travel from the UK we recommend booking 4 to 6 months in advance. This is not because tours sell out, it is because the best Nile cruise ships in your category fill up and you start losing flexibility on dates. For shoulder months like October or April you can book 2 to 3 months out and still have good options.

Egyptian e-visa applications take about 7 days to process and can be done online through visa2egypt.gov.eg. UK passport holders qualify for the e-visa, which is the easiest route. Some UK travellers prefer the visa-on-arrival at Cairo airport for £25, which is also straightforward, but adds 30 to 45 minutes to your arrival. Tourist visas are single-entry by default and last 30 days from arrival.

Currency, tipping, and money tips for British visitors

The Egyptian pound (EGP) has weakened significantly against the British pound in recent years, which is good for UK travellers’ purchasing power. As of early 2026, one pound buys roughly 60 EGP. Carry a mix of cash and card. Major hotels, restaurants, and museums take Visa and Mastercard, but smaller shops at Khan El Khalili and most river crossings prefer cash.

Tipping is part of the culture and the local economy. We build standard guide and driver gratuities into our quotes by default, but tipping at restaurants (10 percent), housekeeping (20 EGP per night), and small services like camel handlers or boat operators (20 to 50 EGP) is normal and appreciated. Bring small denominations.

UK debit and credit cards work at most ATMs in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan. Notify your bank before travel to avoid fraud holds. Some smaller towns and the Western Desert have limited ATM access, so withdraw what you need before heading off the main route.

What UK travellers say about us

🇬🇧 James H. (London, UK)

Brilliant trip. The Egyptologist guide we had in Luxor knew more about the Valley of the Kings than most museum curators. Everything ran on time and the Nile cruise was a highlight of the year.

🇬🇧 Sarah R. (Manchester, UK)

Booked with Attar’s team for our honeymoon and could not fault it. Cairo to Aswan over 11 days, private everything, and the team adjusted plans twice when we wanted to slow down. Highly recommend.

🇬🇧 David and Anne K. (Edinburgh, UK)

We have done some serious travel, this was the best-organised holiday we have taken. Direct contact with the team on WhatsApp throughout, no surprises, and the guides were genuinely passionate about every site.

Frequently asked questions

1. Do I need a visa to travel to Egypt from the UK?

Yes. UK passport holders need a tourist visa. The fastest route is the Egyptian e-visa at visa2egypt.gov.eg, which costs $25 and takes about 7 days to process. Visa on arrival at Cairo airport is also available for the same price.

2. How long is the flight from London to Cairo?

About 5 hours 10 minutes direct on EgyptAir or British Airways from London Heathrow. There are no direct flights from other UK cities to Cairo, so regional travellers usually connect through Heathrow or fly via Istanbul.

3. What is the best month to visit Egypt from the UK?

November and February. Comfortable temperatures across all of Egypt (23-27°C in the south), manageable crowds, and reasonable pricing. December peak season works but is busier and more expensive. Avoid May to September if you want to do the southern temples.

4. How much does an Egypt trip from the UK typically cost?

For a 10-day private itinerary with a 4-night Nile cruise, expect £1,800 to £2,800 per person depending on hotel category and cruise ship class. Flights from London Heathrow are additional, typically £350 to £600 return on EgyptAir or British Airways. Our average UK trip value is around £2,480 per traveller.

5. Can you arrange a UK-friendly itinerary including a Nile cruise?

Yes. The 10 to 14 day Cairo + Nile cruise + Red Sea pattern is our most-booked UK itinerary. We handle every internal flight, transfer, guide, and entry ticket, plus the Nile cruise booking on a ship that matches your preferences.

6. Is Egypt safe for UK travellers?

Yes. The Foreign Commonwealth Office advises against travel to the Sinai Peninsula and the Western Desert near the Libyan border, but the main tourist routes including Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria, and Hurghada are well-secured and routinely visited by hundreds of thousands of European travellers each year.
