A dahabiya is a traditional Egyptian sailing vessel — typically 10 to 12 passengers. The word means “golden” in Arabic, a reference to the gilded vessels that once carried Egyptian royalty along the Nile. Today’s dahabiyas are restored or purpose-built wooden boats with air-conditioned cabins, sun decks, and dining salons.
The difference from a standard 5-star cruise ship is meaningful. A 60-to-80-cabin cruise carries up to 160 passengers on a fixed schedule. A dahabiya carries your group of 10 to 12 at its own pace, anchors in quieter stretches of the Nile away from the main cruise corridor, and has shallow enough draft to reach Esna and other stops that larger ships cannot.
