Egypt Itinerary 10 Days

Egypt 10-Day Itinerary: The Complete 2026 Guide

Ten days is the ideal length for a first Egypt trip. You have time for the full classic route (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel) plus either a Mediterranean detour to Alexandria or three days of Red Sea snorkeling in Hurghada. You won’t be rushing from temple to temple, and you’ll have evenings free to explore night markets, sail the Nile, and absorb the extraordinary atmosphere of a country that has been receiving visitors since the ancient Greeks came to marvel at the pyramids. This guide gives you a complete day-by-day plan, a cost breakdown, and two itinerary variations so you can build the 10-day Egypt trip that fits your travel style. All tours are private with a licensed Egyptologist guide.

What Makes 10 Days the Ideal Egypt Trip Length?

Seven days gets you through the highlights but leaves no room for surprises, slower mornings, or the discoveries that happen when you’re not checking your watch. Ten days lets you breathe. You can spend longer at Karnak without feeling guilty about the next site, take the scenic road from Luxor to Aswan with stops at Edfu and Kom Ombo, and still have three days at the end for Alexandria’s layered Greco-Roman history or Hurghada’s coral reef snorkeling. For a first Egypt trip, 10 days is the length most seasoned travellers recommend.

Days 1-3: Cairo — Three Days in Egypt’s Capital

Three days in Cairo lets you go deeper than the standard 2-day rush. Day 1 follows the iconic Giza route: Great Pyramid, Sphinx, Valley Temple, and Solar Boat Museum. Day 2 covers the Egyptian Museum’s highlights (Tutankhamun’s gold death mask, the Royal Mummies Room) followed by a afternoon in Khan el-Khalili bazaar and Coptic Cairo. Day 3 is for the Old Kingdom: Sakkara, 30 km south of Cairo, holds the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the very first stone pyramid ever built (2650 BC), plus a field of smaller pyramids and the Mastaba tombs of nobles covered in extraordinary reliefs. Nearby Memphis was Egypt’s ancient capital for 1,000 years.

Day 3 afternoon: the Citadel of Saladin and the Mohammed Ali Mosque offer sweeping views over Cairo from the eastern escarpment. The 12th-century fortress and its Ottoman mosque are often missed by travellers who run out of time on shorter trips.

Getting to Luxor: Fly from Cairo to Luxor on the evening of Day 3 (1 hour). Your Luxor guide meets you at the airport.

Days 4-5: Luxor — Two Full Days at the Capital of Ancient Egypt

Two days in Luxor splits naturally across the Nile. Day 4 is the West Bank: Valley of the Kings (3 tombs included, Tutankhamun optional), the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut carved into the limestone cliff at Deir el-Bahari, and the twin Colossi of Memnon that have flanked the road for 3,400 years. Arrive early (7:30am) to get the best light in the tombs and beat the crowds at Hatshepsut’s temple.

Day 5 is the East Bank: Karnak Temple complex, the world’s largest ancient religious complex, followed by the Luxor Museum (small but excellent, with some of the best-preserved New Kingdom artefacts outside Cairo) and Luxor Temple at sunset when it fills with golden light. If you have energy on Day 5 evening, the covered souvenir market near Luxor Temple sells high-quality alabaster, papyrus, and Nubian crafts at negotiable prices.

Day 6: Luxor to Aswan via Edfu and Kom Ombo

This is one of the best day-transfers in Egypt. The private road from Luxor to Aswan (3.5 hours total) passes through the Upper Nile Valley with two major temple stops that most 7-day itineraries skip due to time.

Edfu Temple is dedicated to Horus, the falcon god, and is the best-preserved complete temple in Egypt. Built during the Ptolemaic period (237-57 BC), its walls carry the entire mythology of Horus in crisp, detailed relief carvings. Most visitors spend 45 minutes here, but it rewards a full hour if you let your guide walk you through the inscriptions.

Kom Ombo, 40 km further south, is the only temple in Egypt with a double design: one half dedicated to the falcon god Horus, the other to the crocodile god Sobek. The adjacent Crocodile Museum displays 22 mummified crocodiles found in a nearby tomb. The temple sits directly above the Nile with a view across the water to the sandstone desert hills.

Arrive in Aswan by late afternoon. The Nubian souq near the train station is one of Egypt’s most atmospheric markets for spices, textiles, and traditional crafts.

Day 7: Aswan — Philae Temple, High Dam, Nubian Village

A full day in Aswan city. The Philae Temple, motorboated to its Nile island, is the jewel. Built for Isis, the goddess of magic, it is one of the most beautifully situated ancient sites in Egypt, the colonnades reflected in the water and the reliefs unusually well-preserved in the desert air. Your guide brings the mythological story of Isis and Osiris to life here, which is the central myth of ancient Egyptian religion.

The Aswan High Dam visit takes about 30 minutes: the dam itself and the exhibits explaining the UNESCO rescue operation that relocated Abu Simbel and Philae before the Nile waters rose. The Unfinished Obelisk in the northern quarry, 40 metres long and still attached to the bedrock, gives a unique view of how ancient Egyptian stonecutters worked.

Afternoon: visit a traditional Nubian village by felucca or motorboat. Nubian communities paint their houses in vivid geometric patterns and maintain distinctive cooking traditions. A home-cooked Nubian lunch (ask your guide to arrange) is a trip highlight. Sunset felucca sail around Elephantine Island before dinner.

Day 8: Abu Simbel and Return to Cairo

4am departure from Aswan with the early convoy. Arrive at Abu Simbel as the sun rises over the desert and lights the Great Temple’s four colossal statues of Ramses II. Two hours inside the temples (Great Temple and the smaller Temple of Nefertari), then the drive back to Aswan for a midday domestic flight to Cairo. Afternoon and evening free in Cairo before your international departure or before heading to Alexandria or Hurghada.

Days 9-10 (Route A): Alexandria — Egypt’s Mediterranean City

Drive northwest from Cairo (2.5 hours) to Egypt’s second city and the cultural capital of the ancient Mediterranean world. Day 9 covers the three most important sites: the Qaitbay Citadel (built 1477 AD on the exact footprint of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa (three levels of underground Roman burial chambers, some with a unique fusion of Egyptian and Greco-Roman artistic styles), and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (the stunning modern library built near the site of the ancient Library, with an excellent antiquities museum inside).

Day 10 morning: Pompey’s Pillar (a 27-metre Roman column raised in 297 AD, the largest ancient monolithic column outside Rome), a walk along the Mediterranean Corniche where Alexander the Great’s city once extended to the horizon, and lunch at one of Alexandria’s famous seafood restaurants before driving back to Cairo for your international flight.

Days 7-9 (Route B): Hurghada — Red Sea Reefs and Desert Adventures

Fly from Aswan to Hurghada (1 hour, or drive 3.5 hours) and land on Egypt’s Red Sea Riviera. Three days here is the perfect decompression after a week of intensive ancient sightseeing.

Day 7: Giftun Islands snorkeling day trip by boat. The coral gardens around the Giftun Protected Area are among the healthiest in the Red Sea, with dozens of fish species, rays, and occasional dolphins visible without diving. Glass-bottom boat trips are available for non-swimmers.

Day 8: optional Luxor day trip from Hurghada (3 hours by road, popular with travellers who want to see Luxor’s temples a second time or who missed something on their first visit). Alternatively, a desert safari by quad bike or 4WD into the Eastern Desert mountains, followed by a sunset on a Bedouin hilltop.

Day 9: beach morning, last snorkel, or a visit to Hurghada’s old town (El Dahar) for the local market and souq. Afternoon fly from Hurghada to Cairo for international connection.

Frequently Asked Questions: 10-Day Egypt Itinerary

What can I add to a 10-day Egypt itinerary vs 7 days?

Ten days gives you 3 extra days beyond the classic Cairo, Luxor, Aswan route. The most popular additions are Alexandria (2 days, ancient Mediterranean culture with Greek and Roman sites) or Hurghada (3 days, Red Sea snorkeling and beach relaxation). Ten days also allows a slower pace and an extra day in Cairo for Sakkara and the Old Kingdom sites.

How much does a 10-day Egypt tour cost?

A fully private 10-day Egypt tour for 2 people typically costs $2,240-3,020 per person for mid-range hotels, all private transportation, licensed guides, and entrance fees. Budget options start around $1,500 per person. Contact Egypt Day Tours for a custom quote based on your group size and hotel preferences.

Is 10 days enough to see all of Egypt?

Ten days covers Egypt’s major highlights very well: Cairo, Giza, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel, and either Alexandria or the Red Sea. What you won’t reach comfortably in 10 days: Siwa Oasis (9-hour drive) or Dahab. For a first Egypt trip, 10 days is the ideal length for a thorough experience without feeling rushed.

Should I add Alexandria or Hurghada to my 10-day Egypt trip?

Choose Alexandria if you love history and Mediterranean culture. Choose Hurghada if you want beach time, snorkeling, or a convenient Luxor day trip from a beach base. Families with children often prefer Hurghada for the mix of snorkeling, camel rides, and beach. Solo travellers and history lovers often prefer Alexandria’s layered ancient sites and local atmosphere.

Can I do a Nile cruise on a 10-day Egypt itinerary?

Yes. A 10-day itinerary is ideal for a proper Nile cruise. A typical structure is 2 nights Cairo, a 5-night Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan (Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo), 1 night Aswan with Abu Simbel, and 1 night Cairo before departure. This gives you the complete Nile experience.

What is the best 10-day Egypt itinerary for families?

Families love combining Cairo (Pyramids and camel rides), Luxor (Valley of the Kings and horse carriage rides), Aswan (Nubian village visit and felucca sailing), and Hurghada (snorkeling and beach). Kids especially enjoy the Nubian village, the camel ride at Giza, and snorkeling in the Red Sea. Egypt Day Tours has extensive experience building family-friendly itineraries with the right pace for children of all ages.

What is the best time for a 10-day Egypt trip?

October through April is the best time for a 10-day trip covering Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan, with comfortable temperatures between 20-28 degrees Celsius. If you are adding Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh, the Red Sea is warm and clear year-round. Avoid July-August for the ancient sites in Luxor and Aswan where temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees Celsius.
