The Sinai Trail winds for 550km through the wild, empty mountains of South Sinai, over high passes and through hidden valleys, linking ancient Bedouin routes into one of the world’s most remarkable long-distance hikes. And it belongs to the Bedouin. Walking it means stepping into a landscape and a culture few travelers ever reach, guided by the people who have called these mountains home for centuries.
The story behind the trail is part of its magic. It opened in 2015 as a 220km route created by three Bedouin tribes, and by 2018 it had grown into a 550km trail uniting all eight Bedouin tribes of South Sinai, the first time in over a century they had come together around a single travelling route. It is owned and run by an intertribal cooperative, which means your trek directly supports these mountain communities. We partner with them genuinely; the trekking is always Bedouin-led.
You do not have to walk all 550km. Most travelers take a multi-day stage, anything from a few days to a couple of weeks, while the fittest and most committed tackle the full route over several weeks. Either way, the rhythm is timeless: walking through the cool of the day with your Bedouin guides, camels carrying the gear, stopping at springs and shade, and making camp under enormous starlit skies. The food is simple and good, cooked over the fire, and the evenings around it are unforgettable.
The trail crosses extraordinary terrain, from granite peaks and sandstone canyons to high plateaus, and can include Mount Catherine, Egypt’s highest summit. This is real wilderness trekking, so we are honest about the effort: days are long and the ground is rugged, though the pace is steady and stages can be chosen to match your fitness.
