There is no more relaxing way to bird than from the water, and few rivers reward it like the Nile at Aswan. Aswan is a genuine birding hotspot, with a keen local birding community and a roster of species that excites visitors from cooler climates. Look for the Senegal Thick-knee, the African Pied Wagtail, the Egyptian Goose, and, with luck, the African specialties that reach their northern limit here. Around Lake Nasser and the Aswan Dam, the open water and shoreline add waterbirds and raptors.
