A relaxed Nile and Aswan birdwatching experience by boat and felucca, exploring the islands, riverbanks, and wetlands around Aswan and Lake Nasser for herons, kingfishers, the Nile Valley Sunbird, and African specialties, easily combined with a cruise.
There is no more relaxing way to bird than from the water, and few rivers reward it like the Nile at Aswan. Here the great river braids around granite islands and reed-fringed banks, and a gentle boat or felucca carries you right to the birds. It is birding at its most peaceful, with the scenery and the temples of Aswan as a backdrop.
Aswan is a genuine birding hotspot, with a keen local birding community and a roster of species that excites visitors from cooler climates. Pied Kingfishers hover and plunge along the banks, herons and egrets stalk the shallows, and the tiny, jewel-like Nile Valley Sunbird flits through the riverside gardens. Look for the Senegal Thick-knee, the African Pied Wagtail, the Egyptian Goose, and, with luck, the African specialties that reach their northern limit here. Around Lake Nasser and the Aswan Dam, the open water and shoreline add waterbirds and raptors.
Drifting between the islands, your guide picks out the birds while you simply enjoy the ride. The pace is slow and the light, especially early and late, is magical for both watching and photography. It is a wonderful way to bird for a few hours or build into a longer stay, and it suits everyone from dedicated listers to those who just love being on the river with binoculars in hand.
Best of all, it pairs perfectly with a Nile cruise. Add it to a classic cruise or, for the most atmospheric option, a traditional dahabiya sail, and you turn your journey downriver into a floating birding trip. The calm of the dahabiya and the richness of the riverbanks were made for each other.
See where Aswan ranks on our best birdwatching sites in Egypt guide, combine it with our dahabiya Nile cruise, or fold it into the full Egypt birding and antiquities tour. It is part of our birdwatching in Egypt collection.
