A deep-dive into Egypt’s golden age of empire, centered on Thebes (Luxor): the Valley of the Kings, Karnak, the great mortuary temples, and the legendary pharaohs and queens, led by an Egyptologist.
If the Old Kingdom built the pyramids, the New Kingdom built an empire, and it left its glory written across the city of Thebes, modern Luxor. This is the age of Hatshepsut and Thutmose, of Akhenaten’s revolution, of the boy-king Tutankhamun, and of Ramesses the Great. This deep-dive immerses you in all of it, with an Egyptologist to unfold the drama of Egypt’s most spectacular era.
The heart of the trip is the Theban necropolis on the west bank of the Nile. In the Valley of the Kings you descend into the painted tombs of the great pharaohs, their walls blazing with texts and images meant to guide the king into the afterlife. Your Egyptologist decodes them, turning what most visitors find bewildering into a coherent and astonishing story. Which tombs are open rotates for conservation, and we plan around the best available and arrange special access where we honestly can.
Across the necropolis you explore the mortuary temples that proclaimed each ruler’s eternity: Hatshepsut’s dramatic terraced temple at Deir el-Bahari, the mighty Ramesseum of Ramesses II, and the superbly preserved Medinet Habu of Ramesses III. You visit the Valley of the Queens, with the exquisite tomb of Nefertari among its treasures, and the artisans’ village of Deir el-Medina, where the tomb-builders themselves lived and were buried.
On the east bank rises Karnak, the largest religious complex of the ancient world, a forest of colossal columns built and rebuilt over centuries, alongside the elegant Luxor Temple. Your guide connects the temples, the tombs, and the kings into one grand narrative of power, religion, and art at its zenith. For the deepest dive, we can add Akhenaten’s revolutionary capital at Amarna.
This is the New Kingdom as it deserves to be seen. Place it in the ancient Egypt timeline, extend it into the beyond the tourist trail sites, and have it led by an Egyptologist. It is part of our Egyptology tours collection.
