You have seen the Pyramids and the Valley of the Kings, and now you want the sites the guidebooks treat as footnotes and the enthusiasts treat as treasures. This is that trip. Abydos is a pilgrimage for the serious traveler. The Temple of Seti I holds some of the finest carved reliefs in all of Egypt, their delicacy breathtaking, alongside the famous Abydos King List, a roll-call of pharaohs carved in stone. Behind it lies the mysterious Osireion, a haunting structure tied to the cult of Osiris. Few places reward a knowledgeable guide more.

Dendera dazzles. The Temple of Hathor is one of the best-preserved in Egypt, and recent cleaning has revealed astonishing original color on its ceilings and columns, including the famous astronomical ceiling. Walking its halls and climbing to its roof chapels, with an Egyptologist explaining the goddess, the zodiac, and the rituals, is a highlight that many travelers rank above the famous sites.

The journey can reach further still. Amarna, the short-lived capital of the heretic king Akhenaten, lets you stand in the city of Egypt’s great religious revolution. Tanis, in the Delta, yielded a royal treasure of gold and silver to rival Tutankhamun’s, far less known but extraordinary. These are the deep cuts that turn a good Egypt traveler into a devoted one.
