The Temple of Hathor is one of the best-preserved in Egypt, and recent cleaning has revealed astonishing original color on its ceilings and columns, including the famous astronomical ceiling. The journey can reach further still. Amarna, the short-lived capital of the heretic king Akhenaten, lets you stand in the city of Egypt’s great religious revolution. Tanis, in the Delta, yielded a royal treasure of gold and silver to rival Tutankhamun’s, far less known but extraordinary. These are the deep cuts that turn a good Egypt traveler into a devoted one.
