If you have a single day and a love of birds, this is the trip to take. Just a couple of hours from Cairo, the Fayoum wetlands are Egypt’s most accessible great birding site, and a day here can fill your notebook. It is the perfect introduction for casual nature lovers and a productive outing for keen birders, all without committing to a longer trip.
The star is Lake Qarun, one of Egypt’s most important wetlands, where a remarkable share of the country’s bird species have been recorded. In winter especially it fills with life: greater flamingos wading the shallows, white pelicans, and rafts of ducks such as shoveler, teal, pintail, wigeon, and pochard, along with grebes, coots, and waders working the mudflats. Scan the edges for the elegant Senegal Thick-knee, a sought-after Egyptian specialty, and listen for warblers and prinias in the reeds.
Nearby, Wadi El Rayan adds waterfalls, lakes, and fish farms that pull in still more birds: black-winged stilts, little grebes, marsh harriers quartering the reeds, and migrating waders in season. The mix of fresh water, desert edge, and farmland in this one region is what makes it so rich, with each habitat holding different species.
