Desert Camping Egypt — Bedouin Camps, Stargazing, and Safari

Private overnight desert camping · Bedouin guides + traditional camps · Some of the darkest night skies on Earth

Where to Camp in the Egyptian Desert

Desert camping in Egypt happens in three main regions, each with its own character. The White Desert, three to four hours from Cairo via Bahariya, is the iconic overnight, with chalk-formation campsites under a full Milky Way and zero light pollution. Siwa Oasis, near the Libyan border, offers desert camping in the Great Sand Sea, paired with Cleopatra Spring swims and salt-lake floats. The Sinai mountains, around Mount Sinai and the granite plateaus near Dahab, deliver Bedouin-led camping with star-walking from the Jebel Catherine peaks. Each region uses Bedouin or Bahariya-local guides who set up camp by sunset and break it down at sunrise, so the experience is genuine traditional desert camping, not glamping in a fixed lodge.

A private desert camping tour from Egypt Day Tours is a fully arranged overnight or multi-night camping trip with a licensed guide, an experienced 4WD driver, all camping gear (tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment), traditional meals prepared in camp, and round-trip transfers from Cairo or your starting point. The default is the White Desert overnight from Cairo, but Siwa multi-night and Sinai trekking-and-camping packages are equally available. Customize Your Egypt Tour and we’ll quote your desert camping option by region and number of nights.

What's Always Included on Every Egypt Day Tours Desert Camping Trip

  • Location: Luxor, Upper Egypt

  • Size: Larger than Vatican City — over 200 acres / 80 hectares

The Three Main Desert Camping Regions

Each region is a different camping experience. Pick by what matters most to you:

  • White Desert (most popular), 2 days / 1 night from Cairo via Bahariya. The chalk-formation overnight, Milky Way photography, sunrise on the Crystal Mountain. The standard “Egypt desert camping” trip. Covered fully on the White Desert Tour page
  • Siwa Oasis and Great Sand Sea, 4 to 5 days from Cairo (long drive each way). Desert camping in massive dunes plus Cleopatra Spring, Shali Fortress, oracle of Amun. The more comprehensive Western Desert camping option
  • Sinai trekking and camping, 3 to 4 days based out of Dahab or Saint Catherine. Camping in the granite mountains, Mount Sinai sunrise climb, Bedouin tea around an open fire. The mountain-camping option

The Bahariya-Black Desert overnight is a fourth option but lighter on the camping side. It is more accurately an oasis-lodge overnight with desert day-trips, rather than a full desert camp. Covered on the Bahariya page.

What You Get at the Camp

The traditional desert camp setup uses standard expedition tents, not glamping luxury. Expect:

  • Two-person tents with full-zip flys, ground sheets, sleeping mats, and four-season sleeping bags
  • A central open fire area for cooking and post-dinner gathering. Bedouin or local guides cook traditional dishes (lentil soup, grilled chicken or fish, fresh-baked bread on hot stones, tea boiled over open flame)
  • No fixed bathroom, the camp uses a portable toilet tent set up at a discreet distance. Bring your own toilet paper, biodegradable wipes are provided
  • No mobile signal, the deep desert sits outside cellular range. Bring a paperback and a star chart instead of streaming entertainment
  • Some of the darkest skies on Earth, the White Desert and Great Sand Sea both sit far from any artificial light source. The Milky Way is naked-eye visible from late afternoon onwards in the right season

For travelers who want a higher-comfort version, we can arrange Tunis Village stays near Fayoum or oasis-lodge upgrades in Bahariya or Siwa instead. Mention preferences at booking.

Best Time of Year for Desert Camping

Egyptian desert camping is a winter-and-shoulder-season activity. Specifics:

  • October to April (Recommended), daytime temperatures 18 to 26 degrees Celsius, overnight 5 to 12 degrees Celsius. The bag-and-jacket weather is comfortable, dust storms rare
  • November to February (Peak), the coldest and clearest skies. Overnight can drop to near-freezing, but the four-season bags handle this fine. Best stargazing conditions
  • May to September (Avoid), daytime 38 to 45 degrees Celsius, overnight still 25-plus. The desert is brutal in summer and most camps shut down operations
  • March-April and October, shoulder seasons, warmer overnight which suits travelers who run cold but you trade some stargazing clarity

The full-moon window each month is also worth checking. The Milky Way is best on a new-moon night. If photography is the priority, ask us to schedule your camp around the lunar calendar.

Pricing — Private Desert Camping

Pricing depends on the region (White Desert is cheapest, Siwa and Sinai are higher because of the longer drive), number of nights, group size, and any upgrades. Per the EDT four-tier framework, a White Desert overnight sits in the Mid-range tier, a Siwa 4-night camping circuit sits in the Premium tier, and bespoke multi-night Sinai trekking camps with a private chef sit in the Luxury tier. Request a custom quote on WhatsApp and we’ll send a fully itemised price within 4 hours during Cairo working hours.

What Travelers Say

“Camped in the White Desert with Egypt Day Tours. The Bedouin guide set up two tents and cooked dinner over open fire. The night sky there is something I had never seen before. We saw three shooting stars in the first ten minutes.”

🇺🇸 Anna and Tom B. · Seattle, USA

“Did the 4-night Siwa camping option. Sleeping under the stars in the Great Sand Sea is one of the best things I’ve done traveling. Honest pricing, professional guide, traditional meals in camp every night.”

🇩🇪 Stefan K. · Berlin, Germany

“Sinai mountain camping near Saint Catherine was incredible. We climbed Mount Sinai for sunrise and the Bedouin guide had hot tea waiting at the top. Real traditional camping, not glamping pretending to be camping.”

Desert Camping Egypt FAQ

Is desert camping in Egypt safe?

Yes. Egypt’s main desert camping regions (White Desert, Siwa, Sinai) have been on the standard tourist route for decades. Egyptian tourist police maintain checkpoints at each oasis or trailhead. Always travel with a licensed guide and 4WD as a standard practice.

Will I be cold at night?

Possibly, especially November to February. Overnight desert temperatures can drop to near-freezing even when daytime hits 25 degrees Celsius. The four-season sleeping bags handle this fine. Bring a warm hat, gloves, and a thermal layer for sitting around the camp fire after sunset.

What about bathrooms?

The camps use portable toilet tents set up at a discreet distance from the sleeping area. No flushing, no plumbing, but functional. Bring your own toilet paper.

Can I shower?

No shower facility in the deep desert. Bring biodegradable body wipes for a “camping wash.” For multi-night Siwa and Sinai trips, the itineraries return to oasis lodges between camping nights so you can shower then.

Will my phone work?

Mostly no. The deep desert sits outside cellular range. Some regions have spotty Vodafone Egypt signal but treat the camping nights as offline time. Tell home you’ll be unreachable.

What should I bring?

Warm layer for night, sturdy shoes, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, paperback book, headlamp or torch, personal medications, biodegradable wipes, toilet paper, refillable water bottle. The camp provides everything else.

Can children camp?

Yes, kids 8 and over typically enjoy desert camping. We adapt the itinerary for families, shorter drives, easier walks, more campfire stories time. Mention age of children at booking.
