UNESCO World Heritage paleontology site · 40-million-year-old whale fossils in situ · Day trip from Cairo with 4WD and Egyptologist guide
Wadi El Hitan, Arabic for “Valley of the Whales,” sits 180 km southwest of Cairo in the western Fayoum desert. The site preserves the world’s most important fossil record of the transition of whales from land-dwelling mammals into the marine creatures we know today. The fossils are 40 million years old, from the Eocene epoch when this entire area was submerged under the ancient Tethys Sea. Complete skeletons of early whales — Basilosaurus (around 18 metres long) and Dorudon (around 5 metres) — lie in the desert sand exactly where they were exposed by wind erosion, with their vestigial hind legs visible, the evolutionary smoking gun proving whales descended from four-legged ancestors.
UNESCO inscribed Wadi El Hitan as a World Heritage site in 2005 for its outstanding paleontological significance. The Open-Air Fossil Museum was developed in partnership with the Italian government and opened in 2016. The trail loops past the major fossil exhibits with interpretive panels in English and Arabic. A private Wadi El Hitan day tour from Cairo with an Egyptologist or paleontology-trained guide brings these fossils alive — the scientific story is genuinely extraordinary. “Wadi El Hitan was the unexpected highlight of our Egypt trip. We thought it would be a side-trip and it ended up being the most extraordinary site we visited. The Basilosaurus skeletons in the desert sand, exactly where they were uncovered. Our guide knew the paleontology cold.”
