Tunis Village has a beautiful origin story. In 1980 the Swiss potter Evelyne Porret founded a pottery school here, teaching local children a craft that gave them careers and stability; over a hundred potters trained under her, and the village blossomed into the artistic community it is today. Her mud-brick, Nubian-vault architecture shaped the whole village’s earthy aesthetic, and the creative spirit later grew to include an art center and a much-loved annual pottery festival. It is a genuine model of how craft and community can thrive together.

Your experience centers on the pottery. You visit local studios, watch artisans shape and paint their distinctive Fayoum ceramics with their bold rural designs, and roll up your sleeves for a hands-on workshop at the wheel, guided by a local potter. Between studios, you wander the unpaved lanes, browse the workshops, and soak up the calm. You can stay in a mud-brick eco-lodge, eat fresh farm-to-table Fayoumi food, and watch the sun set over the lake and the sunflower fields.
