A stargazing journey to remote Siwa Oasis, one of Egypt’s most isolated and tranquil corners, where ancient Berber culture, palm groves, and salt lakes meet some of the clearest, darkest night skies in the country.
Far out in the Western Desert, almost at the Libyan border, lies Siwa, an oasis so remote it kept its own language and culture for centuries. That isolation, which once made Siwa a world apart, is exactly what makes it magic for stargazing. There is almost nothing out here to dim the sky, so the nights are vast, silent, and brilliant with stars.
By day, Siwa is a green dream of date palms and olive groves fed by hundreds of springs, ringed by golden dunes. You can float effortlessly in the salt lakes, explore the crumbling mud-brick fortress of Shali, cool off in Cleopatra’s Spring, and feel the deep calm that only a true oasis brings. The pace here is slow and restorative, a world away from the cities.
Then night falls, and Siwa shows its other face. We take you out beyond the oasis edge, into the desert, where the air is dry and clear and the horizon is unbroken. The stars come out in their thousands, the Milky Way arcs overhead, and with our telescopes and guide you explore planets, clusters, and the constellations the ancients knew. Many travelers say the silence and the stars together are the most peaceful moment of their entire trip.
We will be straight with you about one thing: Siwa is far. The journey out is long, which is precisely why it stays so unspoiled. For that reason Siwa works best as part of a longer, slower trip rather than a quick overnight, and the reward for the distance is an oasis and a sky that few travelers ever reach.
Combine Siwa with a White Desert stargazing tour for the ultimate Western Desert dark-sky journey, or fold it into a full astronomy holiday. It is one of the quiet treasures of astrotourism in Egypt.
