A deep-dive into the Pyramid Age, tracing the evolution of the pyramid across Saqqara, Meidum, Dahshur, Abu Sir, and Giza with an Egyptologist, the complete Old Kingdom story rather than a single morning at the Sphinx.
Most visitors see the Giza pyramids and leave thinking they have seen the Pyramid Age. In truth they have seen its final, perfected chapter. This deep-dive tells the whole story, walking you through the astonishing century of experiment and ambition that produced the greatest stone monuments ever built, in the order they actually happened, with an Egyptologist to explain each leap.
We begin where the pyramid began, at Saqqara, with the Step Pyramid of Djoser, designed by the legendary Imhotep as the first monumental stone building in history. From there the story races forward. At Meidum you see a pyramid that reached too far and partly collapsed, a bold failure that taught hard lessons. At Dahshur stand the two pyramids of Sneferu that solved the problem: the Bent Pyramid, where the angle was famously changed mid-build, and the Red Pyramid, the first true smooth-sided pyramid in the world.
Only then do you arrive at Giza, and you arrive understanding it. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramid of Khafre with the Sphinx, and the smaller pyramid of Menkaure are no longer just spectacular objects but the climax of a story you have followed step by step. Your Egyptologist brings the engineering, the kings, and the workforce to life, far beyond the usual myths.
The deep-dive also takes in the sites that fill in Old Kingdom life and death: the 5th dynasty pyramids and sun temples of Abu Sir, and the rich tombs and ongoing discoveries of Saqqara, where vivid tomb paintings show daily life four and a half thousand years ago and new finds emerge regularly. We will be honest about which interiors and closed areas can be accessed when you visit.
This is the pyramid story told properly. See the latest finds on our new discoveries page, place it in context with the ancient Egypt timeline, and have it all led by an Egyptologist. Many guests pair this deep-dive with a half-day at the Grand Egyptian Museum, since so many objects from these very tombs are now on display there. It is part of our Egyptology tours collection.
