The flight. Balloons launch from the West Bank just before sunrise, when the air is calm and cool. After a short safety briefing from your pilot you climb into the basket and lift off as the sky turns from grey to gold. Pilots steer by changing altitude to catch different breezes, so every flight takes a slightly different route, but most pass over or near the great funerary temples of the West Bank. Expect a gentle, quiet ride: the only noise is the occasional roar of the burner.
What you see from above. From a few hundred metres up, the layout of ancient Thebes finally makes sense. The green strip of farmland along the Nile ends in a sharp line where the desert begins, and that is exactly where the ancient Egyptians built their temples and tombs, in the land of the dead facing the sunset. You will see the terraces of Hatshepsut’s temple tucked into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari, the two seated Colossi of Memnon standing alone in the fields, and, on a clear morning, the temples of Karnak across the river.
Landing. Landings happen in open fields or desert, and the ground crew follows the balloon to meet you. Village children often come running to watch. You will then be driven back to your hotel or cruise ship.
Good to know. Flights depend on the weather and on clearance from the aviation authorities on the morning itself. If a flight is cancelled for safety reasons, we will help you rebook another morning. Pickup is very early, so dress in layers: desert mornings can be cool even when the day will be hot. If you are pregnant or have a medical condition or limited mobility, please tell us when booking, as balloon operators may have restrictions.
