There are few experiences in the world quite like drifting silently above one of the greatest open-air museums on earth as the Nile valley turns gold at dawn. The Luxor hot air balloon tour offers a perspective on ancient Egypt that no ground-level visit can match — a 30 to 45-minute flight over the West Bank at sunrise, with the Valley of the Kings, Temple of Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon, and the patchwork of sugarcane fields laid out beneath you.
Luxor’s West Bank skyline at first light is extraordinary. As your balloon lifts silently from the launch field, the haze of dawn lifts to reveal the limestone cliffs of the Theban Necropolis glowing amber and rose. Below, the Nile shimmers silver. The verdant farmland of the floodplain gives way to the pale desert that hides thousands of years of royal burials. It is a view the pharaohs themselves never had — and you will have it entirely to yourself in the still morning air.
The balloons used on this tour are operated by licensed Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority-certified companies with full international safety standards. Experienced pilots provide a safety briefing before takeoff. Typical flight altitude is 300–600 metres, though pilots adjust based on thermals and wind conditions to give you the best sightlines.
This tour includes hotel pickup from your Luxor hotel or cruise, transfer to the West Bank launch site, the balloon flight itself, and drop-off back at your hotel. It is suitable for all ages and fitness levels — no physical exertion is required beyond stepping into and out of the basket. A certificate of flight is provided as a memento.
Book early — balloon tours in Luxor operate subject to weather and wind conditions, and availability during peak season (October–April) fills quickly.
Pre-Dawn Pickup (4:00–4:30 AM): Your guide collects you from your Luxor hotel or cruise ship. Transfer by minibus to the West Bank launch site takes approximately 20 minutes.
Briefing & Inflation (~5:00 AM): On arrival, your pilot conducts a full safety briefing covering basket positions, landing posture, and emergency procedures. Watch the dramatic balloon inflation while the crew prepares for launch.
Sunrise Flight (~5:30–6:15 AM): As the sun rises over the Eastern Hills, your balloon lifts off. Drift above the West Bank at altitudes of 300–600 metres, with views of the Valley of the Kings, Deir el-Bahari (Hatshepsut’s Temple), the Colossi of Memnon, Medinet Habu, the cultivated Nile floodplain, and — on clear mornings — Karnak Temple across the river. Your pilot narrates key landmarks.
Landing (~6:15–6:30 AM): The pilot selects a safe landing field on the West Bank. After a smooth touchdown the crew meets you, celebrates the traditional post-flight ceremony, and presents your flight certificate.
Return Transfer (~7:00 AM): Drive back to the boat landing for the short ferry crossing to the East Bank, then on to your hotel. You will be back in time for breakfast.

Balloon flights in Luxor operate subject to Civil Aviation Authority wind and weather limits. Cancellations are relatively rare between October and April; July–August sees more cancellations due to strong summer thermals.
Most operators set a maximum weight of 120 kg (265 lbs) per passenger. There is no minimum age, though children must be tall enough to see over the basket rim (typically 1.2 m / 4 ft). Pregnant women are not permitted. Please inform us of any relevant conditions at booking.
Dress in layers — early mornings in Luxor can be surprisingly cool, even in summer. A light jacket or fleece is recommended for the flight; it warms up quickly once the sun rises. Flat, closed-toe shoes are required (no sandals or high heels). Sunglasses and a hat with a chin strap are advised for the return to ground.
Yes — cameras and phones are welcome and the views are spectacular. Bring a fully charged battery as sunrise photography is demanding. Drones are not permitted in the balloon zone. A camera strap is strongly advised.
Many guests with a mild fear of heights find balloon flight surprisingly comfortable — the basket is solid, the motion is gentle, and there is no sense of falling. However, if you have a severe height phobia, we recommend reconsidering as there is nothing to hold above waist height. Speaking with your pilot before launch is always welcome.
