Fayoum surprises people. There are real waterfalls and lakes at Wadi El Rayan, the still mirror of the Magic Lake, the wide blue of Lake Qarun, and the charming pottery village of Tunis. And then there is Wadi El Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the fossilized skeletons of ancient whales lie in the sand, a reminder that this desert was once an ocean.
