After a traditional breakfast you visit Pompey’s Pillar and the remains of the Serapeum, the greatest temple of ancient Alexandria, where Egyptian and Greek religion were brought together, then the small Temple of Ras el-Soda, dedicated to Isis. Lunch is a seafood meal with traditional dips at the Greek Club, overlooking the fishing boats of the Eastern Harbour and the Citadel of Qaitbay. In the afternoon you spend time at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, built near the site of the ancient Royal Library, with its galleries, planetarium and its Antiquities, Manuscripts, Sadat and History of Science museums. After an early breakfast you drive to the King Mariout area. On the way your guide, an expert in theology, introduces the Coptic Orthodox Church, and you visit the Monastery of St Mina, next to the UNESCO-listed ruins of Abu Mena. You then spend time in quiet reflection at the Jesuit centre, with a traditional lunch there. In the afternoon you have about three hours at Lake Mariout to fish, kayak or walk with the fishermen, ending with Bedouin mint tea at sunset. Overnight in Alexandria. Meals: breakfast and lunch.
After breakfast you visit St Mark’s Church, believed to stand on the site of the church founded by St Mark around AD 60, then walk through the old streets of Manshiya to St Catherine’s Cathedral, built in 1856 by the Franciscans and the burial place of the exiled Italian king Victor Emmanuel III. Lunch is at Chez Gaby, a classic restaurant from Alexandria’s golden era serving Egyptian and Italian food, followed by a meeting with the YMCA community to learn about faith and life in the city today. Today focuses on Islamic Alexandria. After an introduction to how Islam came to Egypt and how the faiths have lived side by side, you visit the Mosque of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi, the city’s largest, built in Andalusian style over the tomb of a 13th-century Andalusian sheikh, and the neighbouring mosques of Al-Busiri and Sidi Yaqut. After a seafood lunch at Kadoura, you walk through the Ottoman-era Manshiya district, with the Turkish market, an old wikala and the Shorbagi complex of mosque and shops. Overnight in Alexandria. You visit the Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue on Nabi Daniel Street, about 150 years old and home to treasures from the city’s other synagogues. From Raml Station you walk to the house of the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy, now a museum, then visit the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation (Evangelismos), consecrated in 1856. Lunch is at Délices, the historic pastry house that catered King Farouk’s wedding, followed by a visit to the Greek and Latin cemeteries and a conversation with their keeper about the city’s foreign communities.
