Overview

Embark on an exhilarating desert adventure through the breathtaking Colored Canyon Safari from Sharm El-Sheikh. This thrilling 4×4 expedition takes you deep into the Sinai desert where towering sandstone formations showcase nature’s geological artistry—layers of brilliant colors striating canyon walls in shades of red, orange, purple, and gold. You’ll hike through this natural wonderland, experience panoramic vistas of mountain ranges and coastal landscapes, and discover why ancient travelers considered the Sinai sacred.

The Colored Canyon is a geological masterpiece carved over millions of years by wind, water, and geological forces. Multi-colored sandstone layers tell the Earth’s geological history—each stratum representing different environmental conditions from ages past. The canyon walls glow with pigmentation: iron oxide creates reds and oranges, manganese produces purples and blacks, and copper deposits yield blues and greens. Sunlight plays across these colors throughout the day, creating an ever-changing kaleidoscope of hues.

Your adventure begins with an exhilarating 4×4 drive from Sharm through the Sinai desert toward Nuweiba, a journey that itself showcases desert beauty. You’ll witness the transition from developed coastline to pristine wilderness, spotting Bedouin settlements and experiencing the vast silence of the desert. Upon arrival at Colored Canyon, the landscape reveals its secrets—hidden valleys, towering formations, and geological wonders that challenge conventional thinking about desert landscapes.

The hiking experience is memorable without being strenuous. Well-marked trails guide you through the canyon, allowing time to photograph the stunning geology, rest in shaded alcoves, and absorb the spiritual energy that has drawn travelers for centuries. The canyon walls seem to embrace you, creating an intimate connection with nature.

Panoramic views expand your perspective. From elevated vantage points, you’ll gaze across the Sinai landscape toward the Saudi Arabian mountains, comprehend the scale of desert geography, and understand why ancient peoples saw the desert as a pathway between worlds. This tour combines adventure, natural beauty, and geological wonder—a perfect escape from resort routines into Earth’s raw majesty.

FAQs

What's included in the $60 tour price?

The Colored Canyon Safari includes: roundtrip hotel transfers via 4×4 vehicle, continental breakfast, professional geological guide, entrance fee to Colored Canyon, guided hiking through the canyon (3-4 hours), lunch with drinks, all bottled water and refreshments throughout the day, and park fees. Travel insurance and personal purchases are additional. Tips for guides are appreciated but not mandatory.

How difficult is the hiking?

The hiking is moderate-paced with frequent rest stops—suitable for reasonably fit individuals ages 10-75. The terrain is mostly flat canyon floor with some uphill sections to viewpoints. Total hiking distance is approximately 8-10 km (5-6 miles), completed over 3-4 hours at leisurely pace. No technical climbing required. If you have joint problems, knee issues, or cardiovascular concerns, notify us in advance. We can modify the route or arrange alternative activities. Comfortable hiking boots are essential.

What should I bring for this adventure?

Wear light, breathable, moisture-wicking clothing in neutral colors. Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support are crucial—desert terrain is rocky. Bring 2-3 liters of water in addition to what we provide. Sunscreen (SPF 50+), sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat or cap are essential. Layers for temperature changes—desert mornings are cool, afternoons hot. A light jacket for the 6:00 AM pickup. Camera with extra batteries for photography. Small backpack (20-30L) for personal items. Avoid cotton—synthetic or merino wool dries better.

What's the best time of year for Colored Canyon?

October through April offers ideal conditions—daytime temperatures 25-32°C (77-90°F), early morning cool. May-September brings extreme heat (40°C+/104°F+), making midday hiking dangerous. We recommend autumn (October-November) and spring (March-April) for optimal comfort. Winter (December-February) is lovely but busiest—book ahead. The early 6:00 AM start helps avoid peak heat regardless of season. The canyon’s colors are most vivid with soft morning and late afternoon light.

Will I see wildlife in the Colored Canyon?

Possibly! The Sinai desert is home to various species adapted to harsh conditions. You might spot: Nubian ibex (wild mountain goats), hyrax (small rabbit-like mammals), various lizard species, and desert birds including desert eagles. Most wildlife is active during cooler morning and evening hours. Your guide is trained in wildlife identification and behavior. Photography opportunities depend on lucky sightings—wildlife is unpredictable. Desert ecology and animal adaptations are fascinating topics your guide discusses throughout the day.

Is this tour available year-round?

Yes, we operate year-round, but we strongly recommend October-April when temperatures are comfortable. In summer (May-September), we modify the schedule—earlier departures and more frequent breaks to accommodate extreme heat. Colored Canyon is accessible year-round with no seasonal closures. However, winter months are most popular—book 2-3 weeks ahead for December-February dates. Spring and autumn offer excellent weather with fewer crowds. Avoid July-August unless you’re heat-tolerant—daytime temperatures exceed 42°C (108°F).
