2-Day Cairo Express Itinerary: Giza Pyramids, Grand Egyptian Museum and Old Cairo

This itinerary is an estimated framework based on EDT’s operational 4-day Cairo programme, trimmed to a 2-day visit. Prices are anchor estimates only. Contact us on WhatsApp at +20 100 680 88 57 for a fully tailored plan and confirmed pricing.

Two days in Cairo gives you the city’s greatest icons without compromise. Your private licensed Egyptologist leads you from the ancient world of the Giza Plateau – the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World – to the modern Grand Egyptian Museum, then into the living history of Old Cairo’s Coptic and Jewish quarter. Every transfer is private. Every site receives genuine depth, not a surface overview.

Day 1 concentrates on Giza: the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Great Sphinx, the Valley Temple of Chephren, and the Memphis open-air museum with the colossal Statue of Ramesses II. Day 2 opens at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) – home to the complete Tutankhamun collection and the Royal Mummies Hall – then moves to the Saladin Citadel, the Muhammad Ali Alabaster Mosque, and Old Cairo’s Hanging Church, Abu Sirga Church, and Ben Ezra Synagogue.

Best for: first-time visitors with limited time, Cairo stopovers, and travellers who want the defining Egyptian experiences without a multi-day commitment.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Cairo - Giza Pyramids and Memphis

Your EDT representative meets you at Cairo International Airport with a name sign and transfers you to your hotel. After settling in, your Egyptologist guide arrives for the afternoon programme.

Giza Plateau: the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Chephren, and the Pyramid of Mykerinus – the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World. At the base of Chephren’s pyramid, the Great Sphinx guards the plateau, its weathered limestone face dating to the Fourth Dynasty. The adjacent Valley Temple, built from massive granite and limestone blocks, served as the ritual preparation site for Chephren’s burial.

Transfer south to Memphis: the first capital of unified Egypt, founded by King Menes around 3100 BC. The open-air museum holds a colossal alabaster Sphinx and the recumbent Statue of Ramesses II, 10 metres long even lying flat. Return to your Cairo hotel. Overnight in Cairo.

Day 2: Grand Egyptian Museum, Old Cairo and Departure

After breakfast, your Egyptologist guide collects you for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). The largest archaeological museum in the world, located 2 km from the Giza Pyramids, holds over 100,000 artefacts. The complete Tutankhamun collection – including the golden death mask, now displayed for the first time alongside all its 5,000+ companion pieces – fills the museum’s upper floor. The Royal Mummies Hall presents 22 pharaohs including Ramesses II and Hatshepsut. Plan two full hours minimum.

After the GEM, head to the Citadel of Saladin, the medieval fortress that dominated Cairo’s skyline for 700 years. Inside, the Muhammad Ali Alabaster Mosque (completed 1848) offers sweeping panoramic views across modern Cairo and back toward the Giza plateau.

Final stop: Old Cairo. The Hanging Church (Al-Mu’allaqa) is suspended above the gatehouse towers of Roman Babylon, its original fifth-century ceiling still intact. The Church of Abu Sirga marks where the Holy Family rested during their flight into Egypt. The Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of the oldest in Cairo, completes the tour. Transfer to Cairo International Airport for your departure.

Best Time for a 2-Day Cairo Visit

October through April is the ideal window. Daytime temperatures stay between 18 and 28 degrees Celsius – comfortable for open-air sites like the Giza Plateau and Memphis without the punishing heat of summer. The GEM, Citadel, and Old Cairo’s churches are comfortable year-round.

Avoid July and August: the Giza Plateau reaches 40C+ and the compressed 2-day schedule becomes physically demanding. December and January are peak season; book at least six weeks ahead to secure your hotel category and guide. Spring (March to May) brings occasional khamsin sandstorms but otherwise excellent touring weather.

Two days means maximising every hour. EDT schedules Giza in the late afternoon on Day 1 – softer light, fewer crowds – and the GEM first thing on Day 2, before large group tours fill the galleries.

Two days sounded too short – we saw the Pyramids at sunset, the Tutankhamun collection, and the Hanging Church in Old Cairo. Our guide squeezed in Memphis too. Unbelievably efficient. We left feeling we had truly understood Cairo rather than just photographed it.

We had a 48-hour Cairo stopover and were worried we’d rush everything. EDT planned it perfectly: Giza in the afternoon light on Day 1, GEM and Old Cairo the next morning before the coaches arrived. Left the airport with no regrets at all.

Our Egyptologist at the GEM spent two hours on the Tutankhamun galleries alone. We were the first visitors in before the large groups arrived. The precision scheduling on such a short trip was impressive. Private vehicle throughout made every transition seamless.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2 days in Cairo enough to see the main highlights?

Yes. Two focused days cover Cairo’s defining icons: the Giza Pyramids and Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum with the complete Tutankhamun collection, the Saladin Citadel, and Old Cairo’s historic churches and synagogue. A private Egyptologist guide ensures every hour is used well. If you want to add Saqqara, the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, or a felucca on the Nile, a 3 or 4-day itinerary gives that flexibility – but 2 days leaves Cairo with genuine depth.

Can this 2-day Cairo itinerary be customised?

Completely. This is a suggested framework only. You can swap Memphis for the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, replace the Citadel with a Khan el-Khalili bazaar visit, or add a sunset felucca on the Nile. Contact EDT on WhatsApp at +20 100 680 88 57 before your trip and we will adjust the programme to your exact preferences at no extra planning cost.

Are the prices on this page confirmed booking rates?

No. Prices shown are anchor estimates extrapolated from EDT’s 4-day Cairo itinerary to give you a planning reference. Actual pricing depends on your travel dates, group size, selected hotel category, and any additions to the programme. For a confirmed quotation, contact EDT on WhatsApp at +20 100 680 88 57.

What happens on arrival - can I visit the Pyramids on the same day I land?

Yes. Your EDT representative meets you at Cairo Airport arrivals with a name sign and transfers you directly to your hotel. Once checked in, your Egyptologist guide arrives for the afternoon Giza programme. EDT deliberately schedules the Pyramids for late afternoon on Day 1 – the light is better for photographs, crowds are thinner than peak morning hours, and you arrive energised rather than jet-lagged from a full-day schedule.

Is the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) worth prioritising on a short trip?

Yes – without question. The GEM opened in 2023 and houses over 100,000 artefacts across 50,000 square metres. The complete Tutankhamun collection is displayed together for the first time, including artefacts previously in storage for decades. The Royal Mummies Hall presents 22 pharaohs in clinical detail. EDT schedules the GEM as the first stop on Day 2, arriving before large group tours fill the galleries. Two hours minimum; three is ideal.
