4-Day Cairo and Alexandria Itinerary

EDT’s compact 4-day plan combining the Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and Mediterranean Alexandria gives you two of Egypt’s most distinct experiences in a long weekend. Day 1 is arrival and hotel check-in in Cairo. Day 2 is the Giza plateau: three pyramids, the Great Sphinx, and the Valley Temple, followed by the Grand Egyptian Museum with its complete Tutankhamun collection displayed for the first time in history. Day 3 is an overday trip to Alexandria along the desert highway: Pompey’s Pillar, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the Library of Alexandria, Qaitbay Citadel on the Mediterranean waterfront, and the seafront Cornish drive past the old harbor where thousands of ancient monuments lie underwater. Day 4 is your departure from Cairo Airport.

This itinerary is best for travelers who have already booked a long weekend in Egypt, those adding Egypt to a wider trip through Europe or the Middle East, and return visitors who want to focus on Cairo and its Mediterranean neighbor without trying to reach Upper Egypt. The honest trade-off: Day 3 is a 6-hour round trip by road, so the day starts early around 7:00am. You will see Alexandria at a good pace but not in depth. If you want more than one day in Alexandria, a 5-day plan accommodates that comfortably.

All days run as fully private tours with a licensed Egyptologist guide and a private air-conditioned vehicle. No shared groups, no fixed departure times.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: 4 Days Cairo and Alexandria

Day 1: Arrival Cairo

Your Egypt Day Tours representative meets you at Cairo Airport holding a sign with your name. He will assist you through immigration and customs, then transfer you to your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle. The rest of the day is yours to settle in, rest from the journey, and get your first look at the city. Overnight in Cairo.

Day 2: Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum

After breakfast your Egyptologist guide picks you up from your hotel and transfers you by private AC vehicle to the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the largest of the three and the only remaining wonder of the ancient world. You will also visit the Pyramid of Khafre (Chephren) with its intact limestone cap, the Pyramid of Menkaure (Mykerinus), and the Great Sphinx with the lion’s body and pharaoh’s face. The tour includes the Valley Temple below the Sphinx, one of the best-preserved Old Kingdom stone structures in Egypt.

After the Giza plateau you head to the Grand Egyptian Museum, one of the most anticipated cultural landmarks in the world. Located near the Pyramids, the museum houses over 100,000 ancient artifacts including the complete Tutankhamun collection with many pieces displayed for the first time in history. The museum offers a chronological walk through Egyptian civilization from the earliest dynasties through the Greco-Roman period. Lunch is included. Return to your hotel. Overnight in Cairo.

Day 3: Alexandria Overday

After breakfast your private vehicle departs for the 3-hour drive to Alexandria along the desert highway. Alexandria was the intellectual and commercial capital of the ancient Mediterranean world, and the day gives you the city’s Greco-Roman layer alongside its modern Mediterranean character.

You start at Pompey’s Pillar, the tallest ancient monument in Alexandria, a 27-metre red Aswan granite column erected for Emperor Diocletian in 297 AD. Then the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, the largest known Roman burial site in Egypt: three levels of chambers carved into the rock in the 2nd century AD, mixing Pharaonic, Greek, and Roman funerary art in a uniquely Alexandrian hybrid style.

A photo stop at the Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina), the modern replacement of the ancient wonder, now housing over 8 million books. Then Qaitbay Citadel, built on the exact site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria — one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The citadel guards the eastern harbor entrance and gives an open view of the Mediterranean.

You drive along the Cornish seafront past the old harbor of Alexandria, where around 7,000 ancient monuments lie submerged underwater. You also pass the Stanley Bridge, Abu El Abbas Mosque (the largest and most beautiful mosque in Alexandria), and the statue of Alexander the Great. Lunch is included. Return drive to Cairo. Overnight in Cairo.

Day 4: Departure

After breakfast you check out from your hotel and your driver transfers you to Cairo Airport in a private AC vehicle. Your EDT representative assists with immigration and customs for your final departure. Meals included: breakfast only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why include Alexandria in a 4-day trip when there is only one day for it?

Alexandria adds the Greco-Roman and Mediterranean dimension of Egypt’s story that Cairo’s Pharaonic sites alone do not give you. Pompey’s Pillar, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, and Qaitbay Citadel on the Lighthouse site are genuinely impressive and take around 4 to 5 hours to see well. The Cornish seafront drive rounds out the picture of a city that was once the intellectual capital of the ancient world. If your goal is just Cairo’s Pharaonic heritage, a 4-day Cairo classic with Saqqara on Day 3 may be a better use of your time. WhatsApp Attarious at +20 100 680 88 57 to discuss which Day 3 option fits your interests better.

Is the Alexandria day trip too rushed with 6 hours of driving?

It is a long day and an honest trade-off. The 3-hour drive each way in a comfortable private AC vehicle is manageable if you treat it as part of the experience rather than dead time. Your Egyptologist guide can use the drive time to cover Alexandria’s history before you arrive. The sightseeing itself is around 5 to 6 hours at a good pace. Most travelers who do this day say it was absolutely worth it. If you prefer a more relaxed pace in Alexandria, a 5-day plan gives you an overnight in Alexandria with a morning free the next day.

Can I swap Alexandria for a Luxor flight in a 4-day plan?

Yes. A domestic Cairo-to-Luxor flight takes about 1 hour, and a full day on Day 3 covers Luxor’s West Bank (Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut Temple) and East Bank (Karnak Temple) before a return flight to Cairo. This is a different trip entirely: more Pharaonic depth, no Mediterranean character. EDT handles all domestic flight logistics. WhatsApp Attarious at +20 100 680 88 57 with your travel dates and we will tell you which domestic flight schedule works best for your itinerary.

What is the best season for this trip?

October through April is the most comfortable season for both Cairo and Alexandria. Cairo temperatures in this period range from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, and the Giza plateau is pleasant in the early morning. Alexandria has a Mediterranean climate and is mild year-round, though November through February can be overcast and occasionally rainy. May through September is hot in Cairo (35 to 40 degrees on the plateau), but Alexandria is significantly cooler. If you travel in summer, Day 3 to Alexandria is actually the most comfortable day of the trip.

Is this itinerary suitable for families with young children?

Yes, with some planning. Day 2 at the Pyramids and GEM is excellent for children, and the Grand Egyptian Museum has interactive displays that work well for young visitors. Day 3 to Alexandria is the hardest day for younger children given the early start and the 6-hour drive time. If you are traveling with children under 7, EDT can adjust Day 3 to a shorter excursion closer to Cairo such as Saqqara or the Coptic Quarter, and reserve Alexandria for a future trip or a 5-day plan with an overnight. WhatsApp Attarious at +20 100 680 88 57 to discuss family-friendly adjustments.

Can I extend this to 5 or 6 days at the last minute?

Yes. EDT can typically adjust an itinerary up to 48 hours before travel if accommodation is available. A 5-day extension could add Saqqara and Memphis on Day 3, with Alexandria as Day 4. A 6-day extension opens up a domestic flight to Luxor for the Valley of the Kings and Karnak. WhatsApp Attarious at +20 100 680 88 57 with your travel dates and we will check availability and send a revised itinerary and quote the same day.
