Overview

Escape the Luxor crowds and witness the 2027 total solar eclipse from the legendary Siwa Oasis, where Alexander the Great once consulted the Oracle of the sun god Amun. This 8-day private tour combines the Pyramids of Giza, Mediterranean Alexandria, and over 5 and a half minutes of totality above the Great Sand Sea on August 2, 2027.

Siwa Oasis sits deep in Egypt’s Western Desert, a sea of palm groves, salt lakes, and natural springs surrounded by the dunes of the Great Sand Sea. On August 2, 2027, at 12:45 in the afternoon, the moon will swallow the sun above it for around 5 and a half minutes, with the sun standing 76 degrees high in a desert sky that is almost guaranteed to be cloudless. This is the connoisseur’s eclipse. Quieter, stranger, and more intimate than Luxor, with accommodation that is still genuinely available. Our Siwa capacity is limited by the oasis itself, so if this is your kind of adventure, reserve it early.

FAQs

How long does totality last in Siwa compared to Luxor?

Siwa gets around 5 minutes 30 seconds of totality, with maximum eclipse at about 12:45 PM and the sun 76 degrees above the horizon. Luxor gets roughly 50 seconds more. In exchange, Siwa offers solitude, desert scenery, and accommodation that has not sold out years in advance.

Why choose Siwa over Luxor for the eclipse?

Three reasons: availability, atmosphere, and story. Luxor’s hotels are largely gone and its viewing sites will be crowded. Siwa offers a private desert experience in one of Egypt’s most magical places, above the very oasis where ancient travelers came to consult the Oracle of the sun god Amun.

How remote is Siwa, and how do we get there?

Siwa lies deep in the Western Desert, about an 8 hour private drive from Alexandria via the coast road and Marsa Matruh. We break the journey with stops including El Alamein, and you travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with refreshments. The remoteness is exactly what keeps eclipse day peaceful.

What is the desert viewing site like on eclipse day?

We set up a private site on the edge of the Great Sand Sea with shaded seating, cold drinks, full catering, and certified eclipse glasses for everyone. Your Egyptologist guides you through every phase, and 4×4 vehicles remain on site throughout for comfort and flexibility.

Is August in Siwa too hot for this trip?

August is hot, but desert heat in Siwa is dry, and the oasis was literally built for it. We schedule activities for mornings and evenings, the springs and salt lakes offer natural cooling, and during totality itself you will feel the temperature visibly drop as the sun disappears.
