Journey to one of Christianity and Islam’s most sacred sites with our Saint Catherine Monastery day tour from Sharm El-Sheikh. Perched at the base of Mount Sinai in the Sinai Peninsula, this ancient monastery marks the legendary location where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God—a pivotal moment in Abrahamic religious history. You’ll explore the historic monastery, see the sacred Burning Bush where Moses encountered the divine, visit an ancient library containing invaluable religious manuscripts, and understand why pilgrims have journeyed to this remote location for nearly 1,500 years.
Saint Catherine Monastery, founded in 337 AD by the Roman Emperor Justinian, is one of the world’s oldest continuously operating Christian monasteries. Built at the foot of Mount Sinai (also called Jebel Musa, “Mountain of Moses”), it sits at the intersection of three world religions: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. According to biblical narrative, Moses ascended Mount Sinai and received the Ten Commandments inscribed on stone tablets directly from God. This event fundamentally shaped Western religious law and ethics.
The Burning Bush—a small shrub enclosed within the monastery—represents the location where Moses encountered God’s presence manifested as fire that consumed not the plant. This miraculous event compelled Moses to remove his shoes and listen to God’s call to lead the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. Though horticulturists debate the specific species, this particular plant has survived over 1,500 years, inspiring reverence from Christian, Muslim, and Jewish pilgrims.
The monastery’s ancient library contains extraordinary manuscripts: biblical texts predating modern translations, early Christian theological works, Greek and Arabic religious documents, and illuminated manuscripts representing centuries of scholarly devotion. Only researchers access the full collection, but tours view select significant manuscripts.
Standing in this monastery, surrounded by stone walls built over 1,600 years ago, feeling the weight of history and spirituality, you’ll comprehend why believers—regardless of specific faith—journey here seeking connection to the sacred. This is not merely tourism; it’s a spiritual pilgrimage blending history, faith, and human aspiration toward the divine.

Absolutely! This monastery is sacred to Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike—it’s fundamentally a site celebrating shared Abrahamic heritage. The tour welcomes visitors of any faith or no religious affiliation. The guide explains historical and theological significance respectfully, and visitors observe appropriate behavior (modest dress, quiet reverence in sacred spaces). Atheists and agnostics appreciate the historical and archaeological significance. Muslim visitors recognize the site’s sanctity within Islamic tradition (many Islamic texts reference Mount Sinai). The monastery itself maintains this interfaith respect—it’s functioned under Islamic rule for over 1,300 years, embodying coexistence.
Wear modest, respectful clothing: shoulders covered (tank tops and sleeveless shirts not appropriate), knees covered (avoid short shorts or short skirts—capris or knee-length pants preferred), and no transparent or form-fitting clothing. Women may choose to wear a headscarf (provided if needed). Men wear long pants and shirts with sleeves. Comfortable walking shoes are essential—you’ll walk on stone floors and uneven pathways. Bring a light jacket for early morning and cool monastery interiors. Sun protection: sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for outdoor areas. The 3:30 AM pickup means minimal time to dress—plan clothing the night before.
The monastery exploration itself is not strenuous—it’s mostly flat ground and indoor walking. However, the 3:30 AM early wake and 6+ hours of activity require reasonable stamina. The early morning and monastery cool interiors are comfortable. If you choose the optional Mount Sinai summit hike, physical demands increase significantly—hiking 2,285 meters (7,497 feet) requires moderate fitness. Most guests skip the summit hike and find the monastery tour manageable. Those with mobility concerns should notify us—the guide can accommodate varying paces and arrange rest breaks.
October through April offers ideal conditions: comfortable daytime temperatures and cool mornings. The early 3:30 AM wake is easier in winter when mornings aren’t extremely hot. May-September brings extreme heat—the early morning helps avoid midday heat, but temperatures can still become uncomfortable by noon. We operate year-round, but October-April is peak season. December-February is busiest—book 3-4 weeks ahead. March-May and October-November offer fewer crowds with pleasant conditions. Avoid July-August—the combination of early wake and potential heat is challenging for most visitors.
Yes! The optional Mount Sinai summit hike is available for an additional cost (typically $15-25). We offer two routes: Camel Trail (easier, ~1.5 hours up), or Steps of Repentance (steeper, ~1 hour up). The summit is 2,285 meters (7,497 feet) elevation. The hike requires reasonable fitness and endurance. Sunrise hikes are preferred for views and comfort. If you add the Mount Sinai hike, you’ll depart the monastery earlier and return to Sharm later. The full experience becomes approximately 7-8 hours. Many guests skip the hike due to time constraints or physical limitations—the monastery itself is fully satisfying without the summit climb. Decide when booking whether to include the hike.
