No visit to Luxor is complete without standing inside Karnak Temple — the largest religious complex ever constructed by human hands. Built, expanded, and embellished over a span of 2,000 years by successive pharaohs from the Middle Kingdom to the Ptolemaic Period, Karnak covers 200 acres and would have been the beating heart of ancient Egyptian religious life. This private guided tour pairs Karnak with the beautiful Luxor Temple on the same day, giving you a full immersion in the sacred architecture of ancient Thebes.
At Karnak, your Egyptologist guide will lead you through the Avenue of Sphinxes, the towering First Pylon, and into the breathtaking Great Hypostyle Hall — a forest of 134 sandstone columns, the largest standing at 21 metres tall, their surfaces covered top-to-bottom in painted hieroglyphic inscriptions. Dedicated to the Theban triad of Amun-Ra, Mut, and Khonsu, the complex also contains the Sacred Lake where priests performed purification rituals, the red quartzite Chapel of Hatshepsut, and the remarkably preserved obelisks of Thutmose I and Hatshepsut.
In the afternoon, your tour continues to Luxor Temple, built primarily by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II and connected to Karnak by a 3-kilometre Avenue of Sphinxes that was restored to its full glory in 2021. The temple’s colonnaded courtyard, towering entrance pylons, and the remarkably preserved Roman-era chapel built inside the pharaonic walls all tell the story of a site continuously sacred across four millennia.
This full East Bank tour provides the essential foundation for understanding ancient Thebes and is perfect as either a standalone experience or combined with a West Bank tour the following day.
Morning Pickup (8:00–9:00 AM): Your Egyptologist guide collects you from your Luxor hotel or cruise ship on the East Bank.
Karnak Temple (9:00–11:30 AM): Begin at the First Pylon and the ram-headed sphinx avenue. Move through to the Great Court, then the awe-inspiring Hypostyle Hall — allocate at least 45 minutes here. Continue to the obelisks of Thutmose I and Hatshepsut, the Festival Hall of Thutmose III, and walk around the Sacred Lake for the classic panoramic view of the temple complex. Your guide provides detailed context throughout.
Lunch Break (12:00–1:00 PM): Optional lunch at a recommended East Bank restaurant (not included in tour price).
Luxor Temple (1:00–3:00 PM): A short drive to Luxor Temple on the corniche. Enter through the Avenue of Sphinxes (recently uncovered) to the First Pylon with its two colossal statues of Ramesses II and a single standing obelisk (the matching obelisk now stands in Place de la Concorde, Paris). Explore the Colonnade of Amenhotep III, the Sun Court of Ramesses II, and the inner sanctuary. Your guide explains the temple’s unique continuity of use from pharaonic through Roman and Islamic periods.

Following are the items with extra costs during the trek:
Allow 2.5 hours at Karnak and 1.5–2 hours at Luxor Temple for a thorough guided visit. This full-day tour typically runs from 9 AM to 3:30 PM including a lunch break. Rushing either temple means missing significant details — Karnak alone rewards a slow, careful exploration.
Morning visits (8–11 AM) are ideal — the light is soft, temperatures are lower, and tour groups from cruise ships tend to arrive later. By midday the site can become busy and the direct sun in the hypostyle hall is intense. If you visit in summer, a morning start is strongly advised.
Yes — Karnak covers a large area and a thorough visit involves 3–5 km of walking over uneven stone surfaces. Comfortable, flat shoes are essential. The site has some shaded areas (inside the hypostyle hall) but long exposed stretches. Luxor Temple is more compact and easier on the feet.
Yes — both temples charge separate entrance fees. Current prices are approximately $15–20 per temple for foreign visitors (fees subject to change by the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities). All entrance fees are included in this tour price.
Yes — the famous Sound and Light Show at Karnak runs three evenings per week (typically Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, though schedules change seasonally). It takes place after dark around the Sacred Lake and is a completely different, spectacular experience from the daytime tour. We can arrange a combined day tour + evening show package on request.
The 3-kilometre Avenue of Sphinxes linking Karnak and Luxor Temples was fully uncovered and reopened in November 2021 after decades of excavation — one of the most significant archaeological restorations in modern Egyptian history. The avenue once hosted the annual Opet Festival procession carrying the sacred barque of Amun. You can now walk its full length, though our tour typically visits both ends rather than the full walk.
