FAQs

Why is this called a religions and communities tour?

This specialized tour differs from standard Alexandria sightseeing by focusing specifically on religious sites and the interfaith communities that have called Alexandria home throughout history. Rather than simply viewing monuments, you will learn how Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions have coexisted and influenced one another in this remarkable city. This approach creates understanding of cultural diversity and historical coexistence that shaped Alexandria’s character.

What should I wear when visiting religious sites?

Respectful dress is important when visiting churches, mosques, and synagogues. Women should wear long skirts or pants covering the knees and shirts covering the shoulders. Head scarves are recommended for women when entering mosques. Men should wear long pants and shirts covering the shoulders. Avoid bright, revealing, or casual clothing in sacred spaces. Your guide will advise on specific dress requirements for each site you visit.

Are visitors welcome in active churches, mosques, and synagogues?

Yes, most religious communities in Alexandria welcome respectful visitors who approach their sacred spaces with genuine interest and cultural sensitivity. Your specialist guide will have established relationships with religious leaders and communities, ensuring access and appropriate introductions. Visitors are asked to be quiet and reverent, respecting any ongoing religious services or prayer activities you may encounter.

What meals are included in the $650 multi-day tour price?

The $650 per person price includes hotel accommodation for two nights and breakfast at your hotel. Lunch and dinner are not included in the basic price, allowing you flexibility to choose restaurants based on your preferences. However, we can arrange group dinners featuring Egyptian cuisine or meals from specific religious traditions if you request this when booking. Cost for additional meals can be discussed.

How is this tour different from a standard Alexandria tour?

Standard Alexandria tours typically focus on archaeological monuments and famous attractions like Pompey Pillar, the Catacombs, and the Citadel of Qaitbay. You will engage with religious leaders and communities, gaining insider perspectives that standard tourist itineraries cannot provide. This creates much deeper cultural understanding and appreciation.

The tour may include observation of regular religious services, prayers, or ceremonies if timing coincides with your visit dates. For example, you might attend a prayer service at a mosque during regular times or a religious celebration at a church.
