Hidden in the mountains of the South Sinai, 50 kilometres north of Sharm El Sheikh, lies one of Egypt’s most spectacular natural phenomena: the Coloured Canyon. Formed over millions of years by wind and water erosion cutting through layers of multicoloured sandstone, limestone, and quartzite, the canyon walls display a palette of reds, oranges, yellows, purples, and pinks that shifts dramatically with the changing light. No filter, no enhancement — just geology doing something extraordinary.
This day tour from Sharm El Sheikh port (or any Sharm hotel) combines a classic 4×4 desert safari through the rugged Sinai interior with a guided walk through the canyon itself — typically 1.5 kilometres of winding, narrow passages where the cliff walls close to just a metre apart above your head, the colours at their most saturated, and the silence absolute.
The route to the canyon passes through Nuweiba on the Gulf of Aqaba coast, with the opportunity to photograph the port and the extraordinary stillness of the Sinai coast where Saudi Arabia is visible across the water. The 4×4 vehicles drive through open desert wadis, dry riverbeds, and past Bedouin camps before reaching the canyon trailhead. Your Bedouin guide — whose family has known this landscape for generations — leads the canyon walk with an expert eye for the best viewpoints and photographic angles.
After the canyon, a traditional Bedouin lunch is served in a shaded desert camp before the drive back along the scenic Sinai coastal road to Sharm. This is the perfect contrast to a day by the pool — wild, colourful, silent, and utterly unlike anything else in Egypt.
Pickup from Sharm Port/Hotel (8:00 AM): Your Egypt Day Tours representative meets you at the cruise exit or hotel lobby. Transfer by air-conditioned coach to the 4×4 meeting point.
4×4 Safari Begins (9:00 AM): Board your 4×4 Land Cruiser and head north through the Sinai interior. The drive to Nuweiba takes approximately 1.5 hours through dramatic desert mountain scenery. Photo stop at Nuweiba Port with views across the Gulf of Aqaba.
Desert Drive to Canyon (10:30 AM): Leave the coast road and head into the Sinai mountains on off-road tracks. Cross open wadis and pass through classic Sinai desert landscape before reaching the canyon trailhead.
Coloured Canyon Walk (11:00 AM–12:30 PM): Your Bedouin guide leads a 1.5 km walk through the canyon. The trail involves some light scrambling over rocks and narrow passages (no ropes or specialist equipment needed). The most photogenic sections are the tight narrows where the coloured walls are at eye level. Your guide explains the geology and points out the best compositions for photography.
Bedouin Lunch Camp (1:00 PM): Traditional Bedouin lunch served in a desert camp — grilled chicken, salads, bread, soft drinks included. Rest time in the shade before the return journey.
Return to Sharm (2:00–4:00 PM): Drive back along the scenic coastal road with Gulf of Aqaba views. Drop-off at cruise port or hotel.

The canyon walk is moderate in difficulty. It involves approximately 1.5 km of walking on uneven rocky ground, some narrow passages requiring sideways movement, and one or two short scrambles over boulders (no more than 1 metre high). No ropes, harnesses, or specialist equipment are required. Anyone reasonably mobile and wearing appropriate footwear can complete the walk. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or walking frames.
Wear closed-toe shoes with good grip — trainers are minimum, hiking shoes are ideal. Avoid sandals or flip-flops entirely. Lightweight long trousers are recommended to protect against rock grazes in the narrow sections. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and at least 1.5 litres of water per person — the canyon shelters you from sun but temperatures in the Sinai can be very high, especially May–September.
Children aged 8 and above who are active and comfortable scrambling on rocks can complete the canyon walk with appropriate supervision. The 4×4 journey is enjoyable for children. Younger children can visit but may not be able to complete the full canyon walk; your guide can advise an easier alternative route that still shows the coloured formations.
Yes — this tour is specifically designed for cruise passengers arriving at Sharm El Sheikh port. Your guide will meet you at the cruise terminal exit. Please provide your ship name and expected docking time when booking, and we will coordinate the schedule to ensure you return to port with time to spare before departure.
The canyon is accessible year-round, but October to April offers the most comfortable temperatures for the walk. Summer visits (June–August) are possible but require an earlier start (7 AM) to avoid peak heat in the canyon, where there is little airflow. The colours are spectacular in all seasons and all times of day — morning light creates warm orange tones; midday produces the most saturated colour contrasts.
The 4×4 desert drive involves rough tracks with some bumps, particularly in the wadi sections approaching the canyon. Passengers with serious spinal conditions or recent back surgery should consider this before booking — the ride is not smooth. The coastal road sections and the drive to Nuweiba are on tarmac and comfortable. Please inform us of any physical conditions at booking so we can advise the most suitable vehicle seating.
