Embark on a unique submarine adventure descending 22 meters beneath the Red Sea’s surface from Safaga Port. This thrilling shore excursion combines technological innovation with natural wonder as you experience the reef ecosystem from unprecedented perspective—inside a submarine specially designed for tourist exploration. You’ll observe coral formations, tropical fish, and marine life as professional crew members navigate the underwater landscape while providing expert marine biology commentary.
The Red Sea submarine experience is unlike any other underwater activity. Unlike snorkeling (surface-level) or diving (physical exertion), submarines offer comfortable, dry exploration of depths normally inaccessible to casual visitors. The submarine’s acrylic viewing ports provide 360-degree perspectives into the marine world. You’ll observe fish behavior in natural habitat—schools moving in synchronized patterns, hunting sequences, feeding behavior, territorial displays, and the remarkable symbiotic relationships between creatures and coral.
Descending to 22 meters reveals reef zones invisible from the surface. The sunlit zone (0-10m) glows with colorful corals and fish. The twilight zone (10-25m) displays different species adapted to lower light—bioluminescent creatures, larger predators, and creatures with enhanced light-gathering eyes. The submarine’s external lights illuminate creatures and formations that would be invisible in natural darkness, revealing nature’s hidden beauty.
Safaga Port’s submarine operations are among the Red Sea’s finest. Modern submarines feature comfortable seating, climate control, high-quality viewing windows, and expert captains trained in submarine operations and marine biology. The experience is smooth, safe, and appropriate for ages 5-90. Cruise ship passengers can book this excursion as a shore activity—the 2.5-hour experience fits perfectly into port schedules.
This is tourism elevated—combining scientific education, technological marvel, and profound encounters with the natural world. You’ll descend into Earth’s greatest biological treasure and surface with perspective fundamentally changed by what you’ve witnessed.
12:00 PM: Safaga Port Meeting & Check-In**
Meet our representative at Safaga Port (cruise ship passenger meeting point or local hotel pickup). Check-in at the submarine operator’s facility. Safety briefing and orientation about submarine operations, emergency procedures, and expected experience. View educational presentation about Red Sea marine ecosystems and creatures you’ll encounter. Restroom access. Boarding materials prepared (30 minutes).
12:30 PM: Pre-Dive Briefing**
Detailed briefing by submarine captain and crew. Explanation of submarine equipment, control systems, and safety features. Discussion of what you’ll observe at different depths. Rules about photography, noise levels, and behavioral expectations inside submarine. Questions answered by professional crew. Seat assignments optimized for best viewing—windows can’t accommodate everyone simultaneously, so crew coordinates positions (15 minutes).
12:45 PM: Submarine Boarding & Departure**
Board the submarine—a remarkable vessel designed for passenger comfort and safety. Take your assigned seat with a viewing window—the submarine’s greatest feature. Comfortable seating, climate control, and calm atmosphere. Captain and crew complete final safety checks. Submarine departs Safaga Port and navigates toward the reef (15 minutes).
1:00 PM: Descent Begins**
The submarine begins its descent into the Red Sea. Watch depth gauge increase as the submarine glides downward. The reef comes into view—first the shallow sunlit zone with brilliant corals and colorful tropical fish. The captain narrates throughout: identifies creatures, explains behaviors, and shares marine biology facts. You’ll observe: bright yellow and blue angelfish, orange clownfish, purple sea urchins, and parrotfish munching coral (creating sand as they digest it).
1:00-2:00 PM: Reef Exploration at Depth**
Explore the twilight zone at approximately 22 meters depth. Light dims as depth increases, revealing different reef ecosystems. Your submarine’s external lights illuminate creatures adapted to dimness: larger groupers, snappers, barracuda, and graceful spotted eagle rays gliding through the water. Observe intricate coral formations: brain coral massive as boulders, delicate branching corals, sea fans swaying gently. Watch fish behavior—schooling, hunting, territorial interactions. The captain highlights unusual creatures, feeding behavior, and symbiotic relationships (examples: cleaner fish removing parasites from larger fish, anemones hosting clownfish). Photography possible through viewing windows—external camera equipment captures high-quality images (45-60 minutes at depth).
2:00 PM: Ascent & Return to Surface**
The captain begins the ascent. Watch the reef transition from deep zones to shallower, brighter areas as depth decreases. Return to surface viewing the sunlit reef zone differently—now you understand the ecosystem’s three-dimensional complexity. Ascent takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Final observations of surface reef before emerging (15-20 minutes).
2:20 PM: Disembark & Facility Return**
Submarine surfaces near Safaga Port. Carefully disembark—the submarine is stable but movement is cautious. Return to submarine facility on dock. Decompression area where crew discusses observations and answers final questions. Dry off with provided towels. Opportunity to purchase photos taken by submarine crew (external camera documentation available). View educational displays about submarine technology and marine conservation (15-20 minutes).
2:40 PM: Return to Cruise Ship or Hotel**
Transfer back to your cruise ship (before departure) or hotel. Most cruise passengers board ships immediately. Hotel guests enjoy afternoon at leisure. Complete arrival by port departure time.

Absolutely! The 2.5-hour total experience (including transfer, briefing, and submarine ride) fits well within typical cruise port schedules. We coordinate timing with ship departure. However, notify us of your ship’s name and port departure time at booking. We recommend requesting this excursion for mid-to-late day port times. If your ship departs very early (before 2:00 PM), the submarine experience may be too tight time-wise. Safaga Port offers other shorter excursions if timing doesn’t work.
No! The submarine requires no swimming, diving, or special skills. It’s the most accessible deep-sea experience available. The submarine handles all propulsion and depth control—you simply observe. Suitable for ages 5-90 with normal health. The experience is calm, smooth, and non-physical. The only requirements are: mobility to climb submarine entry ladder (assistance available), comfort in enclosed spaces, and interest in marine life. Claustrophobic individuals should discuss concerns with crew—small windows and climate control usually accommodate anxiety.
Red Sea visibility typically ranges from 20-40 meters depending on season and recent weather. Most days offer excellent visibility—you can clearly see fish at 15-20 meters distance. The submarine’s external lights illuminate detail. Water clarity is best April-June and September-October. November-March occasional plankton blooms reduce visibility slightly (usually still 15-25 meters). Conditions are generally excellent for submarine observation. The submarine’s strategic lighting compensates for natural dimness at 22-meter depth, making creatures and coral details clearly visible.
Wear comfortable casual clothing. The submarine cabin is climate-controlled (approximately 22-24°C/72-75°F), so temperature is not a concern. The experience is completely dry—you’ll not get wet. Wear comfortable shoes that can be removed for entry/exit (easier boarding). No special equipment needed beyond normal clothing. If you’re cold-sensitive, bring a light cardigan. Sunscreen is unnecessary (you’re indoors), but don’t wear heavy oils or perfume that might smudge windows or irritate enclosed-space air. Bring tissues if motion-sensitive to minor submarine movement.
The submarine is designed with passenger comfort in mind. It’s not a tiny vessel—it’s approximately 30+ feet long with ample cabin space. The windows are large and numerous, providing continuous external views. Climate control and adequate lighting prevent the claustrophobic feeling of enclosed spaces. However, if you have significant claustrophobia, discuss this with crew at check-in. They can assign optimal seating or suggest alternative Safaga excursions. Viewing windows and constant visual connection to the outside typically ease any closure anxiety. Most claustrophobic visitors report the windows make them feel connected to the open reef.
