Overview

Discover the underwater wonders of Ras Mohamed National Park with our world-class snorkeling tour from Sharm El-Sheikh. This marine sanctuary off Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula showcases some of the Red Sea’s most spectacular coral formations and diverse fish populations. You’ll sail on traditional boats through crystal-clear waters, descend into a living aquarium teeming with colorful reef fish, graceful sea turtles, and intricate coral ecosystems that have developed over millennia.

Ras Mohamed is Egypt’s oldest national park, established in 1989 to protect critical marine habitats. The park encompasses 480 square kilometers of pristine Red Sea ecosystem, featuring dramatic underwater topography: steep coral walls plunging into blue depths, shallow reefs teeming with life, and unique geological features like the famous “Shark Observatory” where experienced divers observe deep-diving sharks (snorkelers remain in shallow water).

The snorkeling experience is accessible to swimmers of all skill levels. You need not be an advanced swimmer—flotation devices and professional guides ensure safety for complete beginners. The reefs typically range from 3-12 meters deep, with most snorkeling in 4-8 meter zones where sunlight illuminates coral brilliance and fish behavior is most visible. You’ll encounter hundreds of fish species: parrotfish with their brilliant blues and greens, angelfish in rainbow hues, groupers, snappers, fusiliers schooling in synchronized patterns, and occasionally larger species like barracuda or small sharks (which are curious but not aggressive toward humans).

The coral itself is an achievement of nature spanning millennia. Hard corals—the reef’s architectural foundation—consist of millions of tiny polyps secreting calcium carbonate skeletons. Soft corals add movement and color with their flowing tentacles. Together, they create three-dimensional structures providing food and shelter for reef fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.

Ras Mohamed’s combination of accessibility, marine biodiversity, and dramatic natural beauty makes it the Red Sea’s finest snorkeling destination. Whether you’re seeking peaceful underwater exploration or thrilling encounters with marine creatures, this national park delivers experiences that transcend ordinary tourism—it’s communion with a living ecosystem.

FAQs

What's included in the $50 tour price?

The Ras Mohamed Snorkeling Tour includes: roundtrip hotel transfers, all-day boat rental, complete snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel, fins, and flotation devices), professional snorkeling guide, lunch with unlimited drinks, entrance fee to Ras Mohamed National Park, safety briefing and instruction, and bottled water throughout the day. Travel insurance, waterproof cameras, and tips are additional. Gratuities for guides and crew are appreciated but not mandatory.

Do I need swimming experience to snorkel?

No! Snorkeling is accessible to non-swimmers with proper flotation support. Our guides are trained to work with beginners. We provide flotation devices (snorkel vests) for anyone lacking confidence. You’ll remain in shallow water (4-8 meters) where you can stand if needed. The guide stays close, ensuring safety and comfort. Many complete beginners discover they’re natural snorkelers once they relax and begin exploring. Inform us of your swimming level when booking—we customize the experience to your comfort.

What should I bring for the snorkeling day?

Wear a light cover-up or shirt to protect against sun during boat time. Bring high-SPF sunscreen (50+) and reapply throughout the day—reef reflection intensifies sun exposure. Sunglasses secure them with a strap. Bring a towel (although the boat provides towels). Wear water shoes or reef-safe shoes to protect feet while entering the water. Bring a waterproof camera if you want underwater photos—we rent or you can bring your own. A light sweater for air-conditioned boat cabin. Avoid heavy makeup, perfume, and sunscreen oils that can damage coral.

What marine life will I see?

Ras Mohamed’s reefs host extraordinary biodiversity. You’ll commonly see: colorful parrotfish, angelfish (multiple species), groupers, snappers, fusiliers in massive schools, pufferfish, butterfly fish, wrasses, goatfish, and occasional sea turtles. Larger species include barracuda, small reef sharks (harmless), and rays. The exact species encountered depends on season, time of day, and water conditions. Each snorkeling session reveals different creatures. Your guide identifies species and explains their behavior. The variety is astounding—200+ reef fish species inhabit Ras Mohamed.

What's the best season for snorkeling in Ras Mohamed?

April-June and September-October offer optimal conditions: clear water, comfortable temperatures, and stable weather. July-August brings extreme heat and occasional high winds. November-March offers good snorkeling with cooler water temperatures (20-22°C/68-72°F), requiring light wetsuits for extended snorkeling. Water visibility typically ranges from 15-30 meters depending on season. We operate year-round. December-February is peak season—book 2-3 weeks ahead. March-May and September-October offer excellent snorkeling with fewer crowds.

Is Ras Mohamed safe? Will sharks attack?

Ras Mohamed is entirely safe for snorkeling. The reef’s sharks are small reef species (typically 1-2 meters) that avoid humans. They’re curious but not aggressive. In 30+ years of snorkeling operations, incidents are virtually unknown. The greatest safety concerns are sun exposure and coral cuts—both easily prevented. More people are injured by sun exposure than marine life. Your guide provides safety briefing and accompanies your group throughout. The park has excellent safety protocols and rescue equipment. Thousands of tourists snorkel Ras Mohamed annually without incident. It’s one of the world’s safest snorkeling destinations.
